Gondar

Gondar: Is an ancient northern city of Ethiopia rich with history and tradition. Gondar is a typical city idyllic and reminiscent of the old Christian kingdoms that lived in this part of the country centuries ago. It is an elevated city; 2,133 meters above sea level with a striking landscape unique to this region of the country; situated at the foothills of the even more elevated Simien Mountains of Ethiopia. The most popular attractions include the magnificent 17th century royal  estate, initialy constructed under the reign of  Emperor Fasiledes and later expanded by his successors throughout the dynasty, over 40 ancient Orthodox Christian churches, and the Ethiopian Epiphany in January  hosted at the Fasiledes bath every year!.  Since Gondar previously served as the capitol of the Ethiopian Empire, the city holds the remains of several royal castles, including those in Fasil Ghebi, (the Royal Enclosure), for which Gondar has been called the “Camelot of Africa”.
